David and Goliath or The Battle at Boston

Mambo takes out two top awards at Linux World Boston

Worldwide Developers Conference 2005

Mambo has furthered its giant-killing reputation by taking two major awards at the Linux World Conference & Expo, in Boston, Tuesday, 15 Feb 2005. The powerful, free point-and-click web site solution won the "Best of Show" award and also "Best Open Source Solution".

Divided into 14 product categories, the Linux World Product Excellence Awards represent major areas of innovation in the Linux and Open Source Community. Judges were from Linux World Magazine.

The "Best of Show" award, which recognizes the best total industry solution, was presented to Mambo for "Mambo 4.5.1". Mitch Pirtle, of Brooklyn, New York, accepted the awards on behalf of Mambo. Wait until they get a load of 4.5.2! Read More

Miro and Mambo unites

Sounds good, but what does it actually mean?

Worldwide Developers Conference 2005

Last month a landmark agreement was announced which will bring Miro and Mambo back together again as a team. There's a lot of talk about new services including commercial support, training and certification, but what does it all really mean to the developers and users of Mambo?

We talk to Peter Lamont, CEO of Miro International and Andrew Eddie, acting Director of the Mambo project and ask some pretty direct questions about what's happening, what we can expect and what it means for the rest of us. Read More

What's coming in Version 4.5.3

More powerful options in anyone's language!

Multi-lingual installer

There are quite a number of goodies for both users and developers in the next upcoming version of Mambo. Apart from the usual battle against bugs, the following outlines some of what you can expect:

  • The ADODB abstraction layer has been implemented, allowing for support of MySQL 4.1+ and paving the way for the support of other database platforms
  • The Mambo web installer has been overhauled and translated
  • The much anticipated translation of the Administrator will be available
  • You will be able to configure the default user type for new users
  • You will be able to edit section information from the frontend
  • Globals settings have been added to allow you to specify the min length of user names and passwords
  • The ability to restrict searching to sepcific areas has been added

By far the greatest focus for 4.5.3 is improving the international support. New tools, teams and resources are in the pipe to make Mambo in your language more accessible than ever.

Article on Third party development

Effective third party development programs benefit all

Add-ins, plug-ins, extensions and applets. Those are just a few of the many words used to describe third party development components. In Mambo-speak, that's components, templates, modules and mambots. Those components are a means to extend the functionality of a piece of software.

Using a third party component typically enable you to: Adapt a product for a specific vertical market, such as legal, retailing or real estate Add advanced or specialized functionality not required by the average user Integrate two or more applications for improved usability or data integration. Oops! We won again!

Mambo wins the prestigious "Best Free Software Project of the Year"

Hot on the heels of winning industry recognition as the LinuxWorld Best Open Source Solution and Best of Show, Mambo has won yet another award, this time from leading Linux publication, Linux Format.

The award, in the most prestigious category of "Best Free Software Project of the Year" was announced this week.

The Linux Format magazine hit the news stands today (March 9, 2005) with a two page spread about results from the competition. Interestingly, the magazine contains a disclaimer about how they had to recalibrate their online vote counter due to a reader voting frenzy, the like of which they'd never seen before. Read More
